Celebrity DJs at London Clubs

Is it just me or are Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson just a little bit annoying? OK, really annoying. As they flounce about London DJing at some of the capital’s best known celebrity haunts, there’s rarely a day that goes by when their photo isn’t plastered across the newspapers.

It’s been reported that Sam earns up to £70,000 a set if she brings Lindsay with her. Bargain! I guess, at least they’re actually DOING something, unlike Paris Hilton who was recently paid mega bucks just to go to clubs in and around London. Miss Ronson has DJd at some of our biggest clubs, including Cafe De Paris, Dolce London, Faces, Mahiki, Chinawhite and Boujis. It does make me wonder whether people actually do flock to these already high profile clubs just because Mark’s sister has done a set there. They obviously think it’s worth the money…

However, Lindsay and Sam aren’t the first celebrity DJs at London clubs. In one of London’s most competitive markets, the big celebrity clubs do have to stay one step ahead of the game, as there are always new places emerging trying to be the next big thing. Of course, already respected artists are sometimes hired - Skin from Skunk Anansie did a set at new members’ club Jalouse a few weeks ago. Then you have the tenuously linked celebrity DJs like Sarah Harding’s boyfriend (or is that fiance?). Sure, he was a DJ before, but certainly not widely known, until he hitched up with Girls Aloud’s most eligible bachelorette, of course. They did a set together at the Cartier International Polo event in Windsor and, more recently, Tom hit the decks at Loop. OK, hardly a great club, but it is still a Central London dancing den and probably didn’t hurt Loop’s rep.

What does annoy me, are the celebrity wannabes and those we love to hate taking to the decks and acting like the big cheese. Peaches Geldof is a prime example. She touts herself as a journalist and DJ, pur-lease. She was one half of DJing duo Trash Pussies, but it’s always been a bit of a media joke and should be a stark warning to ‘celebrities’ thinking that this DJing malarky is easy. It isn’t. Her DJing stint landed her happily at number 7 on the Most Annoying Pop Moments of all time chart. Well done. Oh and don’t forget ex-model-turned-TV-presenter-and-fashionista Alexa Cheung. She recently did a set at Harrods. OK, not exactly a club but it was for a big party. Oh and don’t forget Lily Allen. She’s a singer isn’t she? I thought so, but not according to Crystal Club who apparently paid her many thousands of pounds to do a one hour set. And don’t even get me started on the annoying reality TV crowd. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I ran into Mikey from Big Brother DJing at The Langley a year ago.

I think the line between celebrities and DJs is becoming ever more blurred. Norman Jay, Westwood, Paul Van Dyke, Judge Jules and Carl Cox could be considered celebrities in their own right, after all. I just find it difficult to get too excited about the crazy world of celebrity, and in this time of economic crisis I’m unlikely to stump up the cash to head over to a club just because so-and-so has done a set there. I’ll save my pennies for the real club nights.

Maybe I’m just cynical?

it really bothers me when celebs dj at clubs because they get paid much more than they should and take the space away from real artists that have worked hard to earn their reputation and aren't just up there because their dad is famous or some such nonsense
