The chain that arguably made burgers gastronomically correct again has eight branches situated in the more desirable westerly enclaves, from Belsize Park through to Richmond.

The Venue
With such a burgeoning reputation, Gourmet Burger Kitchen is certainly worth a visit. The awards have been fast and freeflowing – from Hardens naming it the best place in London to get a burger, to the Observer’s Best Cheap Eats Award.

The Atmosphere
The interiors are clean, shiny and bright, if a little clinical, and the entire restaurant is non-smoking. Although it is deceptive, perhaps, to aspire to healthiness when serving up seemingly the most artery-clogging fodder in the world recipe book.

The Menu
The oversized buns are made from sourdough, and the 100% angus beef is fully traceable back to its grass-reared roots. The variations are well thought out and tantalising, including such additions as venison, lamb, chicken and vegetarian.

The Food
Gourmet Burger Kitchen does serve exceedingly good hamburgers. Plump and fresh with amazing ingredients, you might be wise to steer clear of the more adventurous combos and stick with what makes sense.

Be warned that the bacon and avocado burger, a delicious combination which oozes succulence, richness and flavour, is so addictive that it’s almost dangerous, whilst the pesterella – tomato, mozzarella and pesto – is a tasty option, too.

The Last Word
Washed down with Coca Cola straight from the glass bottle, the originality and comfort factor of the burgers here have earnt it the mantle of being the takeaway of choice for many of the area’s hip locals.
