The ViewLondon Review
Located on Bermondsey Street, Village East is a small restaurant which is attracting a fashion conscious crowd thanks to its stylish decor and delicious food. The VenueSet within SE1’s burgeoning Bermondsey area – a locale that looks like being London’s answer to the Meatpacking District in years to come – Village East is the younger sister to the ever popular Garrison just down the road, and is easily managing to keep up with its forebear.
The AtmosphereIndustrial louche meets city chic, slotted over several levels you enter via a long bar, with a cocktail lounge to the right hand side. At the back there are two sections – the one for smokers is a little dreary; better to make like the Big Apple and sit smoke-free then wander to the lowlit bar between courses.
All retro luxe, beige leather banquettes and people-watching, tables are well-spaced and the clientele a style-conscious mix drawn from the design, theatre, banking and media worlds. Staff are attractive and the food consistently well-cooked.
The Food and DrinkFish features heavily – the likes of parma ham wrapped monkfish sits alongside succulent wasabi tempura oysters and soft shell crab; elsewhere chateaubriand and steaks come fresh and deftly cooked. Vegetarians are well accommodated for, with a wide range of nicely tossed salads, while desserts such as glace nougat and thick chocolate pots would be sacrilegious to skip.
The Last WordA welcoming addition to thriving Bermondsey Street; locals haven't been slow to catch on but they will find it increasingly difficult to keep Village East to themselves.
